Los Angeles
Population: 3,500,000 (Metro 13,500,000)
On September 4th, 1781, Don Felipe de Neve, Governor of Alta Califonia, marched on the site of the present city and with solemn ceremony founded the pueblo of Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles - "The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels". The new town's population consisted of 22 children, 11 men and 11 women. In the Treaty of 1845, ending the Mexican War, California was acquired by the United States and Los Angeles became a vigorous frontier town.
Gold was discovered in 1848 in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and by 1849 the gold rush was on. Commercial and industrial expansion were inevitable. In 1892 oil was discovered after a well was drilled on the grounds of a private home: oil derricks soon appeared everywhere.
Today, occupying a land area of 1,200 sq km (464 square miles), Los Angeles has spread out and around the independent communities of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, Universal City and Inglewood. Beyond its municipal lines it is hemmed in by 78 cities, towns and villages identified as"suburbs in search of a city". More than three quarters of all movies made in the United States are produced in the metropolitan area. These and major radio and television broadcasting companies have made Los Angeles the entertainment centre of the West (some say the world). The city thrives on tourism, world trade and highly diversified industry, predominantly the oil, electronics and aircraft and aerospace industries.
Beverly Hills

The home of movie stars, famous athletes and musicians, Beverly Hills is a must-see attraction in Los Angeles. Stroll up and down the most famous streets in Beverly Hills- Rodeo Drive and Melrose Avenue. You'll marvel at the prices in the luxurious boutiques.

Take a walk down Hollywood Boulevard where the sidewalks are lined with stars. Stop off at Mann's chinese Theatre where the hand and footprints of many of america's most famous silver screen stars are imprinted in cement.
