The capital of Alta California under the Spanish, Mexican and American
flags, Montery lies on the Monterey Peninsula and ranges in altitude from
sea level to 360 feet. The peninsula is a popular year-round playground
boasting several golf courses. South of Monterey SR 1 winds through redwood
forests and along the cliffs of the spectacular Big Sur coast.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, 886 Cannery Row, houses more than 500 species of marine life in more than 100 galleries and exhibits. the "Outer Bay"galleries present the mysteries of the open ocean. Included is a million-gallon tank whose denizens, including sunfish, barracudas, tuna, sharks and green sea turtles, are visible through an acrylic panel 54 feet long, 15 feet high and 13 inches thick. Other exhibits include an elliptical, overhead 15,000 -gallon anchovy tank and a remarkable display of jellyfish species. The aquarium also has a touch pool, life-size models of whales and other marine animals, a shorebird aviary, a theatre and historical displays.Feeding demonstrations take place daily at the sea-otter and kelp forest exhibits. |
